Crimson Desert: How to customise your character

Last updated on March 22, 2026

Crimson Desert world is brutal, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look your best while carving a path through it. The game offers some of the most robust customisation options in the genre, yet it’s surprisingly tight-lipped about how to actually use them. If you’re tired of the standard-issue mercenary look, here is how to customise your character.

Making it personal

To start your journey into fashion, head southeast of Hernand to find Theoric’s dyehouse. While he is your first point of contact, you’ll quickly notice a catch: his shelves are empty.

A common mistake players make is buying a dye and expecting it to appear instantly in the customisation menu. In Crimson Desert, you must “Use” the dye from your inventory first. Think of it as “learning” the color. Once consumed, it becomes a permanent part of your palette.

Regional specialists

Don’t expect one merchant to have every shade of the rainbow. Pywell features ten different dye specialists, each focusing on regional palettes. You’ll find them in various cities, usually on the outskirts. Key specialists include:

  • Hernandian & Demenissian: Great for earthy and classic tones.
  • Pailunese & Calphadean: For those seeking more exotic or regal hues.

Hair, beards and tattoos

Changing your physical appearance follows a similar progression path to the dye system. You won’t find a random barber shop in the middle of the first village; instead, customization is tied to your Base Camp.

By following the Greymane faction questline and consistently upgrading your camp at Howling Hill, you will eventually recruit a barber named Eric. Once he sets up shop, he becomes your go-to for:

  • Hairstyles, beards and eyebrows: Perfect for when you need a fresh trim after weeks in the wilderness.
  • Tattoos: You can apply ink to both the face and body to give your protagonist a more rugged edge.

This isn’t just limited to your main hero, either. If you switch to your two secondary characters, you can bring them to Eric to give them a completely custom look as well.

Crafting your own colors

If you don’t want to spend your gold, you can go DIY at a Cauldron (check the building north of the Rock, Paper, Scissors game in Hernand). The general rule is a base of 10 flowers mixed with various insects.

Quick Recipes:

  • Deep Red: 10 Peony + 3 Rhinoceros Beetle + 3 Stag Beetle.
  • Rich Purple: 15 Lavender + 5 Blue Lavender + 2 Longhorn Beetle + 1 Stag Beetle.
