Subnautica 2 is finally out in Early Access, and the first question most people are asking before they buy is a simple one: how much game is actually there? Unknown Worlds has a reputation for deep, content-rich survival experiences, but an Early Access launch is by definition a work in progress. If you played the original or Below Zero, you already know the formula. You also know that launching early means accepting a trade-off.
So before you dive in, here is an honest look at how long the current build actually lasts.
Main Story: Around 15 Hours
Based on what early players have reported and the content available in the current version, Subnautica 2 offers roughly 15 hours of solid gameplay for a focused playthrough. That covers the main narrative objectives, the technology progression, and the core exploration loop across the zones available right now.
That number shifts depending on how you approach the game.
If you are a fast mover who pushes through progression milestones, unlocks blueprints efficiently, and focuses on narrative objectives, you might finish in less than 15 hours. If you are the type to spend an evening designing the layout of a base, drift through bioluminescent zones without any particular goal, or chase every scan and creature encounter, that number can stretch considerably.
The introduced co-op mode changes the equation entirely for a lot of players. Sharing the ocean with a friend or two turns survival sessions into something closer to a collaborative adventure, and that dynamic alone can add hours to any playthrough simply because the experience becomes more unpredictable and entertaining.
Completionist Run: Around 20 Hours

For players who want to see everything the current build has to offer, around 20 hours is a reasonable estimate. At that point you will have encountered most of the creatures, explored the available biomes, interacted with the main technology systems, and spent meaningful time across the different gameplay loops.
Worth noting: Subnautica 2 does not currently have achievements implemented, and there is no clearly defined endgame in this Early Access version. That is expected for a survival sandbox at this stage of development. The game does not hand you a finish line to cross, so the natural stopping point is whenever you feel like you have seen what is available. Most players reach that point somewhere between 15 and 20 hours in the current state.
Is It Worth Playing Now?
The honest answer depends entirely on what you are looking for.
What exists in Early Access right now is the foundation. The world, the survival mechanics, the base-building, the co-op systems, the Biomod upgrades, and the atmosphere that made the original series so distinctive are all present and working. If you want to experience the game grow and have a say in its direction through community feedback, now is a reasonable time to get in.
If you want a complete, polished experience with a full narrative arc, achievements, and a proper conclusion, waiting for the 1.0 release is the smarter move. Unknown Worlds has a track record of seeing their games through, and the final version will likely double or even triple what is available today.
Fifteen hours in a half-finished ocean is still fifteen hours that feel genuinely unlike most other games out right now. Whether that is enough comes down to how much the Subnautica experience specifically appeals to you.

I’m passionate about books and video games. These two great passions represent, for me, a boundless universe where I can “escape” from reality whenever I need or want to. There are so many stories, worlds, and landscapes where I can instantly teleport that I don’t think a whole lifetime would be enough to explore them all (though it would be my greatest dream to be able to).
