Timber scarcity stalls your crafting in Crimson Desert‘s early hours, but chopping trees unlocks weapon refinement and shield upgrades fast. You’ll need Timber and Fine Timber for Hernand’s blacksmith quests, and the right Logging Axe makes harvesting simple. Here’s where trees cluster thickest and how to swing efficiently.
Grab Your Logging Axe
Three sources deliver your first axe within 30 minutes of Hernand arrival:
- Turnali’s Request (Free Axe)
Check the blacksmith noticeboard (central Hernand). Talk to Turnali, he’ll hand over a Logging Axe and mark trees east between rivers. Quest auto-tracks. - Provisioner’s Shop
Hernand tavern square sells axes for 29 copper. Daily restock. Equinsher Saddlery has backups. - Enemy Drops
Bandit loggers drop rarely. Prioritize quest/vendor for reliability.
Equip via F2 wheel (top-left tool slot). Hold Ctrl (LB controller) to target trunks precisely before swinging (LMB/RB).
Best Tree Chopping Zones
- River Island Grove (Turnali’s Spot)
Primary quest hub. Six mature trees between Hernand’s rivers yield 12+ Timber total. Fast travel friendly. - Anvil Hill North Slope
Eight trees lining cliff path. Collect Fine Timber from stumps, regular Timber from trunks. Copper veins nearby. - Essway Forest Edge
Fourteen scattered oaks west of docks. Safest mid-game farm. No patrols. - Nas River Bend
Hidden gem. Five ancient trees drop double Fine Timber. Grab Sealed Abyss Artifact from nearby shrine while farming.
How to Chop Trees Properly
- Step 1: Target trunk
Hold Ctrl until blue reticle locks. Trees glow faintly when hittable. Swing (LMB) 2-3 times until crash. - Step 2: Break logs
Felled trees split into 3-4 chunks. Ctrl-target each log segment. One slam per piece yields 1 Timber + 1 Fine Timber. - Step 3: Collect
Chunks sparkle gold when ready. E or hold E for multi-loot. Inventory stacks to 999.
Watch falling direction: Trees hurt if they crush you. Step sideways.
Efficiency Secrets
- Respawn timer: 20 minutes real-time. Complete nearby quests during cooldowns.
- Environment tracking: M → Environment tab marks ALL discovered trees permanently.
- Axe durability: 200 swings before breaking. Buy spares or repair at blacksmith.
- Horse carry: Mounts haul 50% more Timber than foot travel.

- River Island (fast travel Howling Hill) → 6 trees
- Anvil Hill → 8 trees + copper

- 20min quests → respawn ready
