Iron ore fuels your early game progression in Crimson Desert, essential for weapon and armor upgrades at Hernand’s blacksmith. You’ll spot these metallic silver-gray deposits embedded in cliffs and rocky outcrops across Pywel, but Hernand region’s cliffs hold the motherlode. Here’s exactly where to mine and how to maximize your hauls.
Get Your Pickaxe First
No pickaxe, no iron. Three reliable sources:
- Rhett’s Quest Reward
Talk to Rhett at Equinsher Saddlery (west Hernand). Accepts his “Rhett’s Request” delivery for a free Iron Pickaxe plus inventory space. Location marked automatically. - Provisioner Shops
Hernand town center sells basic pickaxes for 31 copper. Stock refreshes daily. Check Essway vendors later. - Bandit Loot
Mining tools drop rarely from enemies, but save your copper for guaranteed sources.
Equip via F2 wheel (top-left tool slot). Hold Ctrl to aim precisely before swinging (LMB/RB).
Prime Iron Ore Hotspots
- Anvil Hill Cliffs (Best Early Route)
Southwest face yields 12+ deposits within 200 meters. Fast travel to base camp, drop down cliff ledges. Each node drops 3-6 iron. - Hernand River Walls
Follow river east from town. Silver veins sparkle along sheer rock faces. 8 deposits, copper bonus nodes mixed in. - Steel Mountains Southeast
Riskier but richer. 14 clustered nodes circling the peak. Watch for bandit patrols. - Kilnden Workshop East
Safest newbie spot. Single guaranteed vein 50m east, perfect for Rhett’s quest.
Mining Efficiency Tips
- Aim matters: Hold Ctrl to highlight exact hittable spots. Swing connects better, breaks nodes faster.
- Node respawn: 15-20 minutes real time. Circle routes while doing quests.
- Force Palm alternative: Unlocked later, breaks ore without tools via charged melee.
- Environment tab: Press M → Environment marks all discovered veins on map.
What Iron Ore Unlocks
- Weapon upgrades: +5% damage per tier at blacksmith
- Plate armor: Medium protection sets
- Metal shields: Block heavy attacks
- Refined bars: Smelt 5 ore → 1 Iron Ingot for high-end gear
- Daily copper pinch: Merchants sell 5-10 iron but rarely copper. Prioritize mining both.

- Mine Anvil Hill cluster (12 iron)
