Ubisoft has made it official: Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is getting a full remake called Resynced. This is not a remaster or an HD collection of older titles thrown together on modern hardware. Ubisoft is rebuilding the entire game from the ground up using the latest version of the Anvil engine, reworking its systems, and adding new content, all while keeping the original story intact.
Edward Kenway, the Caribbean, and the Jackdaw are all coming back. From what has been shown so far, they look considerably better than anyone might have expected.
Built on a New Engine
The most immediately noticeable change is how different the world looks and feels compared to the original. Images are sharper, lighting is more nuanced, and even the vegetation reacts to your movement as you pass through it.
Weather has also become a genuinely meaningful factor. Storms at sea now directly affect how the Jackdaw handles, meaning you cannot simply hold a direction and expect things to sort themselves out. You have to actually pay attention while sailing.
Perhaps the most welcome change of all is the removal of loading screens when transitioning between land and sea. You can now walk straight to the shore, board the ship, and set off without any interruption.

Combat Reworked
Edward Kenway still fights with his signature combination of twin swords and pistols, but the way combat actually plays out has been completely redesigned from the ground up.
Timing your moves correctly now allows you to dispatch enemies quickly and with style, with the possibility of chaining up to four executions in a row. The parkour system has also been brought closer in feel to what you would find in more recent entries in the series, though Kenway retains his own distinct movement style that sets him apart.
Stealth has received a meaningful update as well. Moving quietly is now a more deliberate and rewarding part of how you approach situations. The tailing missions, which were a consistent frustration in the original game, have also been improved. Getting spotted no longer ends the mission outright. Instead, you are given the chance to recover and adapt to the new situation on the fly.
New Crew, New Story Content

The main story follows the same path as the original, but Ubisoft has woven in a layer of new content that expands the experience in meaningful ways.
You can now recruit three new crew members: Lucy Baldwin, The Padre, and Deadman Smith. Each of them comes with their own side quest and brings something different to the table. Deadman Smith in particular offers a notable advantage in naval combat, as he can help you fire two broadsides simultaneously, which makes a real difference in tougher sea battles.
Darby McDevitt, the writer behind the original game, returned to pen several new scenes for this version. These additions explore more of Edward’s relationship with his wife Caroline and give more screen time to iconic figures like Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. On a lighter note, you can now also keep a monkey or a cat aboard the Jackdaw.
Woodkid Is Back
The full original soundtrack returns, with every sea shanty and ambient track accounted for. On top of that, Woodkid, the composer known for his work on Assassin’s Creed Revelations, has written an original piece specifically for this remake. If you have any fondness for the music of the original game, this one is worth looking forward to.
What Got Cut

There is no multiplayer mode in Resynced, and the Freedom Cry DLC will not be included in the package. This is a focused single-player experience, and Ubisoft has been upfront about that. The goal, according to the creative director, is to deliver the definitive version of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag rather than expand it into something larger and more sprawling than it needs to be.
It has been described as a love letter to fans of the original. Whether that holds up when the game is actually in players’ hands remains to be seen.
Release Date and Collectors Edition
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on July 9, 2026, for PC, PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X/S.
A Collector’s Edition has also been announced, and it includes a statue of Edward Kenway, a map of the Caribbean, Kenway’s logbook, and a special emblem. Pricing for this edition has not yet been confirmed.
If you have fond memories of the original Black Flag, July is shaping up to be a very good month.
I’m passionate about books and video games. These two great passions represent, for me, a boundless universe where I can “escape” from reality whenever I need or want to. There are so many stories, worlds, and landscapes where I can instantly teleport that I don’t think a whole lifetime would be enough to explore them all (though it would be my greatest dream to be able to).
