It seems like Bungie has finally understood that stubbornness in the video game industry can cost you dearly. Although they were initially very vocal about preserving Marathon’s identity as a pure PvPvE extraction shooter, the reality on the ground hit them hard: player retention became a genuine problem. The answer? Marathon is making a major pivot with Season 2, titled Nightfall, launching on June 2.
The biggest surprise is the introduction of two experimental PvE modes, a move designed to breathe new life into the community and attract a whole new audience that prefers to fight the environment rather than other players.

From “No PvE” to “Let’s Give It a Shot”
Casting our minds back to the launch period, Bungie insisted that an exclusively PvE mode would destroy exactly what makes Marathon special: the unpredictability and organic tension created by other players sharing the map. But when server populations drop and the extraction shooter community starts screaming for cooperative experiences, developer pride has to give way to pragmatism.
Season 2 will tackle this transition in two tactical steps:
- First half of the season (at launch): Introduces an experimental mode described as “PvE-lite”. It will focus primarily on AI combat and map objectives, but retains a subtle, almost minimalist touch of PvP. Think of it as a buffer zone for players who want to breathe easier, but not completely.
- Second half of the season: Brings a full PvE mode. No toxic players lurking at extraction points, just you and your squad completing objectives, gathering loot and progressing from match to match as a proper tactical Sci-Fi unit.
Bungie has confirmed that these experimental changes are not just a temporary event. If the feedback is positive, they stand a very strong chance of becoming permanent features integrated into the core of the game. Furthermore, the developers are also toying with the opposite idea: a dedicated hardcore PvP-only experimental mode down the line.

New Zones, Fresh Runners and a Long-Term Plan
Beyond the PvE experiments, Nightfall promises to expand the game’s universe with new maps and updated zones, a new set of Runner shells, and content described as “wild and genuinely fun”.
But the plans don’t stop at Season 2. Bungie has laid out a fairly bold roadmap for the coming period, attempting to demonstrate that they have a clear long-term vision and are not abandoning the project at the first sign of trouble.
It all starts with the current Season 2 (Nightfall), which lays the groundwork for the future by introducing PvE and PvE-lite modes alongside fresh maps and elements like “Sentinel” and “Night Marsh”. Moving forward, Season 3 will focus on a massive overhaul of the initial gameplay experience, delivering heavy community-feedback-driven updates and a new Runner shell.
Then in Season 4, developers plan to add more depth to the gameplay with major improvements to the core extraction loop, affecting how you gather loot and how the base mechanics function. It all culminates with Season 5, which promises a spectacular evolution of the game world, unifying the entire PvPvE universe into a completely new and unpredictable Sci-Fi experience.
Does Marathon Stand a Chance?
Bungie is making the right moves on paper. In a saturated market where live-service games are dying off within their first few months, flexibility is the key to survival. Adding PvE modes might just be the lifeline Marathon needs to stabilize its player base.
That said, a legitimate question remains: aren’t these measures coming a little too late? It remains to be seen whether people will return to the game on June 2, or whether the general audience has already moved on to the next big title.
I’m passionate about books and video games. These two great passions represent, for me, a boundless universe where I can “escape” from reality whenever I need or want to. There are so many stories, worlds, and landscapes where I can instantly teleport that I don’t think a whole lifetime would be enough to explore them all (though it would be my greatest dream to be able to).
