Guild Wars 3 everything we know

Last updated on October 12, 2026

ArenaNet has finally confirmed what fans have waited years to hear. Guild Wars 3 is real, it is a prequel, and it takes us to a part of Tyria nobody has explored before. It is also the studio’s first new game since Guild Wars 2 in 2012. With early alpha footage now shown at Gamescom 2026, here is everything we know about Guild Wars 3 so far, from the setting and the professions to combat, platforms, business model and what is still unconfirmed.

Guild Wars 3 announcement and timeline

ArenaNet revealed Guild Wars 3 on June 5, 2026, at Summer Game Fest, according to the official press release. Game director and studio head Colin Johanson announced it on stage, and the Steam and PlayStation store pages went live the same day. In the release, Johanson called it “a new era not just for ArenaNet and Guild Wars, but also for MMORPGs as a whole”.

The project has reportedly been in development for about four years, and the team is the largest at ArenaNet, according to RPG Site’s Gamescom preview. ArenaNet has also confirmed that it is developing all three Guild Wars games at the same time.

Release date, beta and platforms

There is no release date yet. The game will launch globally, and the first beta test is scheduled for fall 2027. Players can buy directly at GuildWars3.com or wishlist the game on Steam and the PlayStation Store.

Guild Wars 3 is confirmed for PC, through a standalone client and Steam, and for PlayStation 5. It is the first Guild Wars game to come to home consoles, and controls are designed for both keyboard and controller. Steam does not list Mac or Linux support.

Setting: ancient Orr in its golden age

Guild Wars 3 is a prequel set in ancient Orr, more than 1,000 years before the original Guild Wars. ArenaNet describes this part of Tyria as a vast wilderness frontier, in which rival guilds clash over whether to protect or exploit the land. In interviews, the developers explained that the setting gives every player the same starting point, so nobody has to play years of earlier games to catch up.

You play as a Vaelwarden, a member of a guild dedicated to protecting the land’s wild spirits. Each player gets a Seeker, a spirit that connects them to the spirits of Orr and also works as a mount for travel across the open world. According to the Gamescom footage, the Warden’s Watch outpost is the story’s starting point, and the Mavenwrights occupy a temple of Dhuum, whom Grenth recently overthrew.

Playable species at launch

Four species will be playable at launch, though one of them is still a secret. MassivelyOP reported that Humans, Asura and Kodan are confirmed, plus a mystery species linked to Orr’s lost history. Developers also said they want to add more species later, and Tengu were mentioned as a possible candidate.

Professions and roles

The first confirmed professions are Warrior, Necromancer and Ranger. At Gamescom, the Warrior appeared with sword and shield, using a kick that knocks enemies back, an elite Rampage skill and a dive bomb attack in the air. The Necromancer appeared with a scythe, a momentum based attack that travels farther the faster you move and heals through lifesteal, plus a movement ability called Necrotic Traversal. The Ranger can slow fall by shooting arrows while dropping and has Polar Vortex, which lifts allies into the air and applies cold to their weapons.

Roles are also coming back. Inven Global reports that Johanson says Guild Wars 3 moves closer to the classic tank, healer and DPS structure, with roles more clearly defined than in Guild Wars 2 and closer to Guild Wars 1. Every profession fills a role in its own way. A Necromancer tank summons swarms of minions to absorb hits, while a Warrior blocks attacks on the front line with sword and shield. The demo even showed an aggro system.

Gameplay, combat and movement

Guild Wars 3 is an action RPG built around positioning, momentum and movement, combined with build crafting. Movement flows between sliding, leaping, riding, gliding, mantling and running on walls, with a stamina system limiting wall running and gliding. Gliding runs on momentum and allows banking and diving, and it appeared to work in the middle of combat.

Combat uses an action camera similar to Guild Wars 2, with a reticle and enemy health bars but no lock on or tab targeting. Many skills are situational. Some only unlock after a dash, and some change while you run on walls. Momentum affects damage and knockback, so a Warrior dropping from height hits harder over a wider area. Terrain matters too. Knocking enemies into walls adds damage and a stun, and cliffs let you throw them off the edge. The same rules apply to players.

Teamwork shapes fights as well. In the demo, a shield Warrior launched an ally into the air for aerial strikes, and a teammate’s fire burned away a spider’s web to deal extra damage. Enemies have targetable weak points, like the device on the back of a Mavenwright “Burner”. Stacking cold attacks can even freeze bosses, which breaks the usual RPG rule that bosses ignore crowd control.

Builds inspired by Guild Wars 1

Players bring only a limited number of active skills into an adventure, so builds can be tailored to regions and enemies. Fire against spider webs is one example. Johanson named build countering as the biggest Guild Wars 1 inspired element, and said high difficulty areas should encourage experimenting with builds and team synergies. The system is still in development, and it is not yet clear whether skills will be tied to weapons as in Guild Wars 2.

World structure and multiplayer

ArenaNet calls Guild Wars 3 a “meaningfully multiplayer” game. According to MassivelyOP, the open world currently holds 20 players and parties are limited to four, because momentum, movement and flow would be lost with too many players on screen. That places the game between the party focus of Guild Wars 1 and the huge world bosses of Guild Wars 2.

The world runs on a megaserver with dynamic shards that spin up and down, and ArenaNet wants it to work without loading screens. PvP and high trust, dungeon like experiences are planned, with more details to come.

Business model: buy to play

In its Guild Wars philosophy post, Colin Johanson confirmed that Guild Wars 3 will be a buy to play game at release. There will be no monthly fees and no battle pass subscription fees, and ArenaNet argues that paid battle passes and recurring seasonal tracks work like an ongoing fee. Spending money should never give players an unfair advantage.

That does not mean everything is included forever. ArenaNet says it will offer expansions and other purchases, such as visual items, account services and time saving conveniences, if players find them worth the investment. Pricing has not been announced, and the press release says details will come later in 2026 and into 2027.

Guild Wars 2 connection

Guild Wars 2 is not going away. ArenaNet says it will keep receiving updates far into the future, and a new Hall of Monuments will link a Guild Wars 2 account to a Guild Wars 3 account. Johanson also stated that ArenaNet does not aim to make direct sequels, and that the games will coexist as different experiences set in Tyria.

Guild Wars 3 at Gamescom 2026

At Gamescom 2026, press saw about 11 minutes of pre recorded early alpha footage, presented by Colin Johanson, with only a basic HUD that he said is likely placeholder. No public playable build has been announced, so do not expect hands on sessions for regular visitors.

Still unconfirmed

ArenaNet has not announced a release date, a price, the game engine or the fourth launch species. Equipment, traits, progression and social features have not been shown yet either.
