Frictional Games has quietly confirmed that a new version of its horror classic Amnesia The Dark Descent is planned for release before the end of 2026. The news did not come from a trailer or a press release but from the studio’s own 2025 annual financial report, first spotted by a Reddit user going by CarlZzZoneNnn and later picked up by outlets including Insider Gaming, PC Gamer, and ScreenRant.
The relevant line, translated from the original Swedish filing, states that Frictional plans to release a new version of Amnesia The Dark Descent by the end of the year. No further detail was given, leaving fans to speculate about exactly what form this new version will take.

Remake, remaster, or simply a port
Since the wording in the report is vague, several possibilities remain open. Amnesia The Dark Descent originally launched in 2010 as a low budget indie title, so a visual overhaul or a full remake built on modern technology would make sense given how influential the game has become. At the same time, the phrase used in the filing could just as easily point to something more modest, such as a straightforward port bringing the game to Nintendo Switch 2 or optimizing it for current generation consoles and PC hardware.
Frictional has not issued an official statement clarifying which direction it is taking, and as of now there has been no confirmation beyond the annual report itself.
Why Amnesia The Dark Descent still matters
Amnesia The Dark Descent is widely credited with popularizing the hide and seek style of horror game, in which the player has no means of fighting back and must rely on running or hiding to survive. Its influence can still be felt in later titles built around the same core idea, including Alien Isolation. The game follows Daniel, who wakes up inside the desolate Castle Brennenburg with no memory of his past and must piece together what happened to him while avoiding the horrors lurking in the dark.
Part of the game’s lasting popularity also comes from its viral spread during the early days of Let’s Play videos on YouTube, where reaction footage of players screaming through its corridors helped introduce the series to a much wider audience than a small budget release would normally reach.
What else is Frictional Games working on
The same financial report confirms that Frictional’s main focus right now remains Ontos, a new original horror title revealed at The Game Awards in 2025 and described as a spiritual successor to the studio’s 2015 psychological horror hit SOMA. Ontos is currently targeted for an early 2027 release. The report also mentions a third, currently untitled project that is said to be in pre production, suggesting Frictional has a fairly packed roadmap for the coming years even before accounting for whatever this new Dark Descent version turns out to be.
Given that the update surfaced through a financial document rather than an official reveal, it remains to be seen whether Frictional Games will formally announce the project soon or continue to stay quiet until closer to its planned late 2026 release window.
I’m passionate about books and video games. These two great passions represent, for me, a boundless universe where I can “escape” from reality whenever I need or want to. There are so many stories, worlds, and landscapes where I can instantly teleport that I don’t think a whole lifetime would be enough to explore them all (though it would be my greatest dream to be able to).
