007 First Light: IO Interactive Is Already Planning a Sequel for the New James Bond

Last updated on May 26, 2026

007 First Light launches tomorrow, May 27, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but IO Interactive is already thinking ahead. The Danish studio’s CEO, Hakan Abrak, has confirmed that a sequel is a real possibility, with one key condition: the first game needs to win over the gaming community.

Why Are We Already Talking About a Sequel?

Before the official launch, Abrak sat down with The Game Business and spoke openly about the future of the James Bond franchise in gaming. His message was clear: the studio has both the ambition and the right relationship with Amazon MGM to do more, but everything hinges on player reception.

“There’s no doubt that we all want to see how this is doing. It’s not only the Amazon MGM side, it’s also the IO Interactive side. Is our character going to be well received? Is there going to be a community that likes him and wants to see more? We are so blessed that we are in a place where we can pick and choose what we want to do. So, if this goes really well and it’s a beloved thing from the community, why not?”

A statement that sounds like an open door, not a hesitation.

What Is 007 First Light and Why Does It Matter?

Announced in November 2020 under the codename Project 007, the game finally arrives after years of near-silence. IO Interactive, best known for the Hitman series, chose to craft a fully original origin story for Bond: a 26-year-old James Bond, freshly recruited into MI6‘s Double 0 program, who must prove his worth after a mission ends in tragedy.

The gameplay blends stealth infiltration with direct action, gadgets, vehicle chases, and missions across global locations, a formula that worked brilliantly in Hitman, now adapted for the world of 007.

Available platforms:

  • PlayStation 5 / available from May 27, 2026
  • Xbox Series X|S / available from May 27, 2026
  • PC (Steam / Epic Games) / available from May 27, 2026
  • Nintendo Switch 2 / confirmed for Summer 2026

Players who purchased the Deluxe Edition can already play today, May 26.

IO Interactive and Amazon MGM: A Strong Partnership for the Future

A key detail Abrak highlighted is the quality of the partnership with Amazon MGM, the rights holder of the Bond franchise (acquired by Amazon in 2022). The CEO described the relationship as one built on quality and mutual respect, with both sides committed to making the game a long-term success.

That alignment matters: without Amazon MGM‘s approval, no sequel is possible. The fact that Abrak is speaking publicly about the possibility suggests informal conversations are already happening behind the scenes.

At the game’s very first reveal, Abrak stated: “This is just the beginning of our journey with 007.” That phrase, combined with the game’s deliberately open ending, suggests 007 First Light was designed from day one as the first episode of a franchise, not a standalone title.

The Ending Leaves Things Open (No Spoilers)

Journalists who completed the main campaign ahead of launch noted that the final scenes deliberately open new narrative threads. Without going into details that would spoil the experience, the game’s conclusion sketches a larger world and leaves questions unanswered, just enough to make you want a second chapter.

This approach mirrors exactly how IO Interactive built the Hitman series: each entry added context and raised the stakes for the next.

James Bond Could Finally Become a Major Gaming Saga

If 007 First Light succeeds at launch, IO Interactive could give the James Bond franchise what fans have been asking for years: a coherent, lasting universe in video games. The last truly memorable Bond game, GoldenEye 007, dates back to 1997. The gap over the past decades has been enormous.

The timing also helps: GTA 6 was delayed, leaving room for Bond to dominate the gaming conversation in the first half of 2026. Early previews were overwhelmingly positive, and player expectations are high.

Everything will be decided in the days following launch. Sales figures and community reaction will be the signal that both IO Interactive and Amazon MGM are watching closely. A strong debut could significantly accelerate the decision to greenlight a sequel.

007 First Light launches tomorrow, May 27, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
