Nintendo just dropped update 3.0.2 for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and it is more than a routine patch. The game turned 25 this year, and Nintendo chose to mark the occasion with something small but thoughtful for players who are still tending their islands.
Here is everything that came with the update.

A Free Anniversary Gift in Your Mailbox
To celebrate 25 years of Animal Crossing, Nintendo sent every player a commemorative item directly to their in-game mailbox. It takes the shape of the iconic Animal Crossing leaf, the series’ most recognisable symbol.
You do not need to do anything special to get it. As long as update 3.0.2 is installed, just check the mailbox outside your house and it will be there. Simple as that. Collectors will definitely want to grab it.
Bug Fixes That Were Long Overdue
The bulk of this update is dedicated to bug fixes, and a few of them are genuinely satisfying to see addressed.
The floating resource bug is finally gone. Rocks were launching materials into the air before your shovel actually made contact, which made the whole gathering loop feel a bit off. A previous patch had partially addressed it, but 3.0.2 finishes the job.
The crafting exploit has also been patched. There was a glitch that let players craft complex recipes requiring up to six different materials even when they did not actually have those materials in their pockets. If you were benefiting from that one, that window is now closed.
And perhaps the strangest fix of all: the dung beetle no longer floats in mid-air. There was a visual glitch causing the beetle to hover in place after the snowball it was pushing disappeared. Insects now obey the laws of physics on your island.

Improvements for Visitors and Happy Home Paradise
If you play with others or have invested time in the Happy Home Paradise DLC, a few meaningful changes landed with this update too.
Visiting villagers will no longer wander into bizarre spots inside your home or around town. The bug causing them to appear in completely wrong locations has been fixed.
Hotel rooms in the DLC are no longer a trap. A glitch was locking players inside hotel rooms due to strange client behaviour and furniture placement issues. That is resolved now.
The beach in Happy Home Paradise was also causing a progress blocker for some players. Animals who wanted a vacation home were stopping to appear on the beach, which made it impossible to keep building homes for anyone who had not finished their queue yet. That has been corrected as well.
How to Get the Update
Your Switch should download it automatically if you are connected to the internet. If it did not kick off on its own, press the plus button on the Animal Crossing icon in your home menu and select Software Update. It takes only a minute or two.
Update 3.0.2 is not a massive content drop, but it does leave the game in a noticeably cleaner state. Between the anniversary gift and the long-standing bug fixes, it is a solid reason to boot up your island again if you have been away for a while.
I’m passionate about books and video games. These two great passions represent, for me, a boundless universe where I can “escape” from reality whenever I need or want to. There are so many stories, worlds, and landscapes where I can instantly teleport that I don’t think a whole lifetime would be enough to explore them all (though it would be my greatest dream to be able to).
