Cyberpunk 2 could have multiplayer after CD Projekt dropped the idea in 2021

Last updated on October 29, 2026

Cyberpunk 2077 was a strictly single-player adventure, but its sequel might change that. A new job listing from CD Projekt Red has reignited talk of a multiplayer mode in Cyberpunk 2.

The studio has not confirmed anything officially, but the clues keep piling up year after year.

What the new job listing says

CD Projekt Red is looking for a Lead Quest Programmer for Cyberpunk 2. The role is based in Canada, can be fully remote and requires at least 7 years of experience programming AAA games.

Whoever gets the job will lead the team handling the technology behind quests and story.

The interesting part shows up under the optional qualifications. There, the studio mentions an understanding of multiplayer network architecture and client-server synchronization for game state and quests.

It is not a hard requirement, but it is hard to believe it ended up there by accident. Syncing quests between players points more toward co-op than a competitive mode.

Not the first sign of this kind

The listing follows an earlier opening for a Lead Network Engineer, which talked about designing the network architecture and online systems for Cyberpunk 2.

And back in January 2024, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski said the studio was considering multiplayer elements for the sequel, without sharing further details.

What happened in 2021

Multiplayer is far from a new idea for CD Projekt. After Cyberpunk 2077, the studio planned for its next AAA game to be a standalone multiplayer title set in the Cyberpunk universe.

That plan changed after Cyberpunk 2077’s troubled launch. On March 30, 2021, during a strategy update, president Adam Kiciński announced that the studio had reconsidered the project.

Instead of a standalone online game, CD Projekt promised to stay focused on story-driven single-player RPGs and to gradually bring online elements into all of its franchises.

In other words, what we are seeing in these job listings lines up pretty well with the plan the studio made public five years ago.

Where Cyberpunk 2 stands right now

The game, originally known as Project Orion, officially entered pre-production in spring 2025. The project is led by CD Projekt Red’s North American branch, with studios in Boston and Vancouver, working together with the team in Poland.

The team has grown to almost 150 people, and CD Projekt expects up to 400 developers could be working on the game by 2027.

Cyberpunk 2 will run on Unreal Engine 5, the engine the studio switched to for its future games. As for release, CD Projekt has made it clear the game will not launch before 2028.

Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the Cyberpunk universe, has revealed that the sequel will keep Night City and add a brand new city, which he described as a Chicago gone wrong.

What this means for players

For now, nothing is set in stone. We do not know whether we are talking about co-op, PvP or just a few online features alongside the main campaign.

Judging by the listings, the most likely scenario would be an optional co-op component that does not sacrifice the single-player story fans love the series for. But for now, that remains speculation.

Until we learn more, if you have not played Cyberpunk 2077 or the Phantom Liberty expansion yet, you have all the time in the world to catch up with Night City.
