Rockstar Games has spent the past year revealing just how alive Leonida is going to feel, and the wildlife scattered across its trailers and screenshots may end up being one of the most talked about systems in Grand Theft Auto VI. Between the two official trailers, the batch of 70 screenshots released alongside them, and the recent Netflix presentation, dedicated fans have already catalogued roughly thirty different species across the state, from swamp predators to backyard pets.

A living ecosystem inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar built its reputation for wildlife density with Red Dead Redemption 2, a game whose ecosystem included close to 200 distinct species with their own behaviors and food chain. GTA 6 appears to be following that same philosophy, only transplanted into the swamps, coastlines, and forests of a fictional Florida. So far Rockstar has not published an official animal checklist, so everything below comes from frame by frame analysis of the two trailers, the official screenshots, and the recent Netflix showcase, cross referenced with community trackers who have been logging every sighting since May 2025.
With GTA 6 now scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the wait has given the community plenty of time to pore over every frame in search of new creatures.
Domestic animals spotted so far
Pets already look like a recurring detail in Leonida, with at least eight distinct animals tied to NPC households or storefronts. A chihuahua and a Rottweiler both return from GTA V, while a Doberman, an Australian shepherd, and a green iguana appear to be newcomers. The Netflix presentation added an American Staffordshire terrier and a Labrador retriever to the mix, along with a third dog whose breed could not be clearly identified.

One of the more unusual finds is a corn snake kept in a glass tank inside Jason and Lucia’s apartment during the second trailer. Given that both Red Dead Redemption games featured huntable wild snakes, it would not be surprising if Leonida’s swamps hide a wild version of the same species. A house cat, already familiar from GTA V, also makes a brief appearance.
Marine life along Leonida’s coastline
The underwater side of the map looks just as varied. Sea turtles, dolphins, and sharks were all visible in the first trailer, with dolphins and sharks marking a return from GTA V. Alligators prowling the shallows, an unidentified aquatic species, tropical reef fish, and a moray eel round out the original reveal.
| Marine animal | First spotted | Also in GTA V? |
| Sea turtles | Trailer 1 and screenshots | No |
| Dolphins | Trailer 1 | Yes |
| Sharks | Trailer 1 and screenshots | Yes |
| Alligators | Trailer 1 and screenshots | No |
| Tropical reef fish | Screenshots | No |
| Moray eel | Screenshots | No |
| Manatees | Netflix presentation | No |
| Rays | Netflix presentation | No |

The Netflix showcase in late August 2026 added manatees drifting through what looks like an Everglades style wetland, along with rays gliding through open ocean, both details that reinforce just how closely Leonida mirrors the real Florida coast.
Forest and wilderness creatures
Leonida’s forests, and Mount Kalaga in particular, are shaping up to be dense with wildlife. Deer and fawns both return from GTA V, while raccoons, foxes, and squirrels appear to be new to the series. A cougar, described in earlier GTA V material as one of the map’s apex predators, is also confirmed, and the Netflix presentation added rabbits, wild boars, bison, and rats to the tally.

Early in the second trailer, a raccoon can be seen slipping in and out of a dumpster behind Brian, one of Jason’s friends, a small but telling detail about how much environmental texture Rockstar is packing into the city itself. A separate screenshot of Mount Kalaga shows another raccoon alongside foxes, deer, and the cougar that will likely pose the biggest threat to hikers and hunters in that region.
It is worth noting that bison appeared only in an in game television advertisement during the Netflix presentation, and Rockstar has a history of teasing animals this way that never made it into the actual game. GTA V showed horses in its own in universe commercials, yet horses were never huntable or rideable in the final release, so the bison sighting should be treated with some caution until it turns up in actual gameplay footage.
Birds filling out the skies of Leonida
Birds tend to go unnoticed compared to predators and pets, but they play a major role in making an open world feel inhabited, something Red Dead Redemption 2 demonstrated well. GTA 6 already has around a dozen confirmed species, including a great blue heron, a brown pelican, an anhinga, a mottled duck, American flamingos, and cormorants, all visible in the first trailer.
| Bird | First spotted | Also in GTA V? |
| Great blue heron | Trailer 1 | No |
| Brown pelican | Trailer 1 | No |
| Anhinga | Trailer 1 | No |
| Mottled duck | Trailer 1 | No |
| American flamingo | Trailer 1 | No |
| Cormorants | Trailer 1 | No |
| Crows | Trailer 2 | Yes |
| Canada geese | Trailer 2 | No |
| Gulls | Trailer 1 and 2 | Yes |
| Pigeons | Netflix presentation | Yes (GTA IV) |
| Canary | Netflix presentation | No |

Crows and gulls both carry over from GTA V, while pigeons make their first series appearance since GTA IV. Between the wetlands, forests, and beaches shown so far, it would not be surprising if hunting birds ends up being one of the quieter but more rewarding activities once the game launches, much like it was in Red Dead Redemption 2.
What this means for hunting in GTA 6
Rockstar has already confirmed hunting as one of the activities available in Leonida, alongside fishing, pool, and basketball. With roughly thirty species already spotted across four ecosystems and months still left before launch, the roster is only likely to grow. Whether every animal on this list ends up being huntable, or whether some remain purely decorative like the horses in GTA V’s commercials, is something only the finished game will confirm.
Grand Theft Auto VI releases on November 19, 2026, exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
I’m passionate about books and video games. These two great passions represent, for me, a boundless universe where I can “escape” from reality whenever I need or want to. There are so many stories, worlds, and landscapes where I can instantly teleport that I don’t think a whole lifetime would be enough to explore them all (though it would be my greatest dream to be able to).
GTA6 is gonna be the most detailed game ever, and at the same time people are paying attention to even more details, like counting and listing all the animals, huntable or not, LOL. But the important question is, how many dogs will we be allowed to own? I’d like one of every one of the possible breeds.
