God of War Laufey finally gets its release date

Last updated on July 30, 2026

Santa Monica Studio has confirmed exactly when fans can pick up God of War Laufey. During a packed panel at San Diego Comic Con 2026, creative head Cory Barlog revealed that the game will launch on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027. Sony backed up the news with a short teaser posted on the official PlayStation account, and the title is already available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store.

This marks a genuine shift for the franchise. For the first time in a mainline entry, players will not be stepping into the boots of Kratos. Instead, they take control of Laufey, better known to longtime fans as Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother.

A New Kind of God of War Story

God of War Laufey picks up shortly after Faye’s death, an event players already witnessed at the start of God of War in 2018. Rather than closing her story there, the game follows Faye as she wakes up in the Everywhen, a realm that serves as the afterlife of the gods. There she discovers that the protections she put in place to keep Kratos and Atreus safe are beginning to unravel, forcing her to fight her way through a land filled with dangerous magic and ruthless deities pulled from mythologies well beyond the Norse pantheon.

Gameplay footage shown during PlayStation’s State of Play in June 2026 already teased fights against Sekhmet, the Egyptian god of war, and Begtse, a Mongolian war deity, suggesting the roster of enemies will pull from a much wider mythological pool than previous entries. Actress Deborah Ann Woll, who first voiced Faye in God of War Ragnarok back in 2022, returns to lead the game and has said the project was originally pitched to her nearly a decade ago, all the way back in 2018.

Physical Copies Are Coming, and That Matters

Santa Monica Studio also confirmed that God of War Laufey will ship with a physical disc release, a detail that carries extra weight given Sony’s recent announcement that it plans to move away from physical game production entirely starting in January 2028. That makes Laufey one of the last major PlayStation exclusives guaranteed a disc edition before that shift takes effect.

A Crowded February for Gamers

February 2027 is shaping up to be one of the busiest release months in recent memory. God of War Laufey lands just a few days after Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis and shortly before Persona 4 Revival, with Fable following the week after and Metro 2039 also due out that same month. Despite the competition, Santa Monica Studio appears confident in the release window, likely helped by the fact that GTA 6 is expected to clear out much of the late 2026 hype cycle before Laufey even arrives.

What Comes After Laufey

Barlog used the Comic Con panel to look further ahead as well, confirming that a new Kratos led God of War project is already in development and will tie directly into the events of Laufey’s story rather than existing as a separate side chapter. That puts Santa Monica Studio in the unusual position of juggling four God of War projects at once: Laufey itself, the next Kratos led sequel, a Greek Trilogy Remake announced earlier this year with TC Carson returning to voice Kratos, and the Prime Video television adaptation, which remains paused following an on set injury to actor Ryan Hurst.

With a confirmed date now locked in, all eyes turn to whether Santa Monica Studio can deliver a God of War game built around a character other than its iconic protagonist, and whether Faye’s afterlife adventure can live up to the weight of the franchise around her.
