Granblue Fantasy Relink is without a doubt one of the best games I have played this generation. It was the perfect addition to a long list of great releases over the years, and 2024 was no exception.
The base game gave us hundreds of hours of gameplay, and for a Monster Hunter fan looking for something fresh, it delivered in a big way.
The game was originally promised to us by Platinum Games, but it was ultimately developed by Cygames themselves, with a bit of outside help along the way.
A comeback stronger than ever
In the past, we received enough updates to make the base game even sweeter, or should I say, absolutely stacked. Still, sadness crept in at some point when I realized the updates would eventually stop coming and the grind would slowly fade away.
Well, two years after launch, Cygames decided to deliver one of the most impressive expansions we have seen in a video game in years.
Great new characters
Endless Ragnarok adds a ton of new content, but one of the most interesting new mechanics is definitely the roguelite mode called The Conflux. I can say it is perfect for any fan of the genre, offering dozens of hours of content where the constant loop never really feels tiring.
I really wanted this expansion to bring new characters, and the developers delivered, not one, not two, not four, but six new playable characters.
Out of these six characters, two are already familiar faces, being two memorable bosses from the main game, Gallanza and Maglielle, both with an exceptional and unique design, just like every other new character added.
I did not get the chance to sink dozens or hundreds of hours into the expansion yet, but I did manage to test every character and finish a large part of the story along with the new bosses added in this update. I can honestly say there was not a single moment where I felt bored, everything flowed naturally and smoothly, and I kept wanting to play more and more.
A rival for Seofon
The new designs are just as good as what we already had in the base game, adding characters that fans have wanted since the game first launched back in February 2024. There are also bosses that look better than ever, packed with new, glowing, and dangerous effects all at once.
An expansion made by the gods
There are quite a few steps you need to follow to play this expansion. First, you need to finish the main story. Second, you need to enjoy the new roguelite mode I mentioned above, since it is mandatory if you want to fully understand the story and get a satisfying continuation.
The perfect addition to this expansion was definitely the new bosses, terrifyingly difficult ones at that. You probably need a controller in hand along with the skill and technique required to take them down without struggling too much, and it is honestly impressive how demanding they are.
Sure, you can always lower the difficulty, but let us be honest, after investing hundreds of hours into this game, the Easy mode does not really appeal the same way it might have at the start.
I can only say that I want more
Granblue Fantasy Relink Endless Ragnarok is an excellent way to close a chapter, one that brought plenty of joy and a bit of sadness too. I really hope Cygames keeps working on this game, or on a sequel, because this universe deserves a lot more fame and attention.
