If you have put serious hours into Phasmophobia, you know the feeling. You are inside a haunted location, the atmosphere is doing its job, and you glance at your teammate to realize they look exactly like you. Same face, same clothes, same everything. Players have been asking for actual identity in this game for years. On May 5, 2026, Kinetic Games finally delivers.
The first major update of the year is called the Player Character Update, and it changes how your character looks and moves from the ground up.
A Full Wardrobe System With No Paywall

This is not a dropdown list with three options. Kinetic Games built a proper cosmetic system covering multiple categories: hairstyles, outerwear, casual clothing, and accessories. You pick what fits your playstyle, or just what looks good while you are fleeing a Revenant.
The character models themselves have been rebuilt. Movement animations are noticeably more natural, and interactions with in-game objects have been updated too. The EMF reader gets new animations as a specific example, which makes the whole experience feel more grounded in the physical space.
The part the community has responded to most: everything is earned in-game. No microtransactions. Cosmetics unlock through challenges or with virtual currency you earn during missions. That is the entire system. Kinetic Games could have gone a different direction here and most players would have accepted it. They did not, and it is worth saying so directly.
Legacy Rewards for Long-Term Players

Players who were active during the Cursed Hollow 2026 event and completed its limited-time missions are getting exclusive legacy items. A Forest Spirit Mask, a special shirt, and a necklace. These cannot be obtained any other way. They exist specifically as a marker of time spent in the community, something you either have or you do not.
Where This Fits in the Bigger Picture
This update is not the finished game. Kinetic Games has been working toward a 1.0 release for a while, and the Player Character Update is one step in that direction. The team has signalled that more is coming before the full launch, though specifics have not been shared yet.
After the Alan Wake collaboration in 2025, which brought thematic content and a richer narrative layer to the game, the studio continues treating Phasmophobia as something still in progress rather than a product that shipped and moved on. A full customization update that avoids monetization entirely fits that approach.
May 5 is confirmed. If you have not loaded in for a while, this is a reasonable excuse to come back. And this time, at least, you will not look identical to everyone else on the team.
I’m passionate about books and video games. These two great passions represent, for me, a boundless universe where I can “escape” from reality whenever I need or want to. There are so many stories, worlds, and landscapes where I can instantly teleport that I don’t think a whole lifetime would be enough to explore them all (though it would be my greatest dream to be able to).
