Ark 2 – Everything you need to know

Let’s be real, the development of Ark 2 has been a bit of a rollercoaster. First announced back in 2020 with a cinematic trailer that felt like a fever dream, Studio Wildcard most ambitious sequel has faced its fair share of silence and delays. While we once hoped for a 2023 launch, the latest word from the studio (and a recent update on the Epic Games Store) has pushed the release date of Ark 2 to 2028.

It’s a long wait, but the studio isn’t just sitting on its hands. They’ve laid out a roadmap for Ark: Survival Ascended that effectively turns the current game into a testing ground for what’s to come.

The story so far

If you’re wondering how we got here, you have to look back at the Genesis: Part 2 expansion. When that colony ship tore apart, we saw a Santiago clone being jettisoned toward a mysterious, Earth-like planet. That’s where Ark 2 picks up.

Studio Wildcard has already started connecting the dots with the Lost Colony expansion (released Dec 2025) and the upcoming Legacy of Santiago. These aren’t just filler; they are narrative bridges designed to introduce characters like Santiago’s daughter, Meeka and to live-test mechanics that will eventually define the sequel.

Vin Diesel role

One of the weirder headlines surrounding Ark 2 is Vin Diesel’s role. He’s not just the face of Santiago; he’s actually the “President of Creative Convergence” at Wildcard. The guy apparently has over 1,000 hours in the original game, so he knows his way around a Thylacoleo.

However, Jeremy Stieglitz recently dropped an interesting bit of candor: the game’s ambitious narrative is actually “an open question” depending on Diesel’s availability. The dev team has prepared two versions of the script, one if they get a lot of Diesel’s time for performance capture and another if they only get a few hours. It’s a strange way to build a triple-A story, but it’s certainly unique.

Gameplay

Even without raw gameplay footage, Wildcard has made it clear that Ark 2 won’t just be more of the same.

The biggest shift is the introduction of souls-like melee combat. That means proper targeting, dodging, blocking, combos, a much more hands-on system compared to the original. The game is also moving toward primitive weaponry and a third-person-only perspective, which is a notable departure. Traversal is getting an upgrade too. Expect things like climbing, swinging, sliding, and parkour-style movement.

The setting, an alien world called Arat, will feature dynamic events that happen whether you’re involved or not. You can ignore them or jump in, but either way they’ll shape what’s happening around you. Crafting is being expanded as well. Instead of simple recipes, you’ll be combining modules to create tools and weapons, with materials affecting both stats and appearance. The idea is to allow for a huge number of possible combinations.

Platforms and the Xbox Deal

Microsoft clearly saw the potential here, securing Ark 2 as a launch exclusive for Xbox Series X|S. It’s also hitting Game Pass on day one. For the PS5 crowd, don’t lose hope to the wording “console launch exclusive” usually implies that the exclusivity period will eventually end, much like the original game’s journey.

Community and mods

Wildcard knows that mods kept the original Ark alive for a decade. For the sequel, they’re integrated mod.io, which means cross-platform modding is a go. Xbox players will finally be able to download user-created creatures and maps just as easily as PC players.

Ark 2 is clearly trying to be something much bigger than a simple iteration. Between the 2028 window and the radical shift to “souls-like” mechanics, Studio Wildcard is taking a massive swing. Whether it lands or not will depend on how those mechanics feel when we finally get that Early Access build in our hands.
